Python Counter

Python में अक्सर हमें यह जानना होता है कि किसी list या string में कोई value कितनी बार आई है — जैसे किसी word में कौन सा letter सबसे ज्यादा बार आया, या किसी survey में किस option को सबसे ज्यादा वोट मिले। इसके लिए Python का collections.Counter एक बहुत उपयोगी tool है।

Counter Python के collections module का एक tool है, जो किसी iterable (list, string, आदि) के हर element की frequency (कितनी बार आया) count करके एक dictionary जैसा object बना देता है।

सरल भाषा में — Counter हर value को गिनकर बता देता है कि वह कितनी बार आई है।

Counter को Import कैसे करें?

Counter Python का built-in keyword नहीं है — इसे इस्तेमाल करने से पहले collections module से import करना जरूरी है।

Note: अगर बिना import किए Counter इस्तेमाल करने की कोशिश करेंगे, तो Python NameError देगा।

List में Values की Frequency निकालना

Example

from collections import Counter numbers = [1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4] count = Counter(numbers) print(count)

Output:

Counter({3: 3, 2: 2, 1: 1, 4: 1})

यहाँ साफ दिख रहा है कि 3 सबसे ज्यादा (3 बार), और बाकी numbers कम बार आए हैं।

String में Characters Count करना

Counter सिर्फ list ही नहीं, किसी string के हर character की frequency भी निकाल सकता है, क्योंकि string भी एक iterable है।

किसी Specific Item का Count निकालना

किसी एक particular value का count निकालने के लिए उसे dictionary की तरह key से access किया जाता है।

Note: अगर कोई value Counter में मौजूद ही न हो, तो normal dictionary की तरह KeyError आने की बजाय Counter 0 return करता है।

most_common() सबसे ज्यादा बार आने वाले elements को उनके count के साथ return करता है।

Counter और count() का Basic Difference

List में एक built-in count() method भी होता है, जो काफी हद तक Counter जैसा लगता है — लेकिन दोनों में बड़ा फर्क है।

❌ बिना import किए Counter इस्तेमाल करना

✅ सही तरीका

❌ most_common() का Result List की तरह समझना

result = letter_count.most_common(1) print(result[0]) # यह एक tuple है: ('r', 2)

most_common() हमेशा tuples की list return करता है — हर tuple में (value, count) होता है, सिर्फ value नहीं।

❌ Counter और Normal Dictionary को Confuse करना

Counter dictionary जैसा दिखता है और dictionary जैसे operations भी support करता है, लेकिन इसमें most_common() जैसे extra counting-specific methods भी होते हैं, जो normal dictionary में नहीं होते।

❌ list.count() को बार-बार Loop में इस्तेमाल करना

for item in set(numbers): print(item, numbers.count(item)) # धीमा तरीका

हर unique item के लिए अलग से count() चलाना धीमा और inefficient है — इसकी जगह सीधे Counter(numbers) इस्तेमाल करना बेहतर और तेज़ है।
